The Right to Insult

The Right to Insult

There isn’t anyone that you and I can point at that knows everything. We are all students of life trying to figure out as much as we can about it. Due to this reality of not knowing everything, it becomes necessary for us to share with each other and trade knowledge in order to improve our understanding and life in general. Teach others what you have learned and they likewise should do the same, one strengthens the other.

The knowledge each one of us possesses is not greater than other’s; we can only claim to know differently, but not more. We must be obedient to this understanding and humble ourselves accordingly. Surely it is possible to know more in regards to a specific subject matter when comparing two or more individual’s degree of understanding about it. But in general, it is arrogant for any of us to think we know more than others.

Thinking that you know more is disingenuous, and even worse, using this frame of mind to look down on others or to insult them is even a much greater offense. It is very common for many people to assume this illegitimate right that only highlights them as insincere, egotistical and arrogant. It is easy for anyone to believe they are right and assume what everyone else believes is wrong. But the same way they feel about others, it is the same someone else is going to feel about what they put forward. No one is above or can escape the example they set for others; how we judge is how we will be judged. And how we address others is exactly how we will be addressed.
